New National Nature Reserve

Ancient woodland with stunning views.

Situated just 3.5 miles from the campsite at the top of Dorstone Hill is one of the UK’s newest national nature reserves ~ Gillian’s Wood. Designated as such in 2024, the reserve features gnarled ancient trees, a wide variety of birdlife and delicate wild flowers, as well as stunning views over the surrounding countryside. Gillian’s Wood is a beautiful ancient woodland site that the Woodland Trust are restoring to its former glory. Perfect for scenic walks with views like the one I captured, taken on a crisp winter’s day looking back towards Staunton on Wye.

Take a short or longer walk along way marked trails, choosing the 1km Woodland Walk that takes you into the wood pasture restoration area or a longer 5.2km route known as the Restoration Ramble through the pasture into the ancient woodland restoration area.

Alternatively, from the wood you can take a walk to Arthur’s Stone (owned by English Heritage): a neolithic burial site linked to the legend of King Arthur. There is so much to enjoy on the doorstep of the campsite.
